Werder Bremen are wasting no time following the end of the Bundesliga season, already looking towards the next campaign with the double signings of Felix Wiedwald and Ulisses Garcia, adding to the recent signing of striker Anthony Ujah from 1. FC Köln in the early stages of summer roster work.
As many a keen observer predicted, 25-year-old keeper Felix Wiedwald has returned to the club from Eintracht Frankfurt. Formerly at the Weser Stadion as a youth player and at U23 level, he has signed a two-year contract.
“Felix Wiedwald has developed greatly over the past few years,”explained sporting director Thomas Eichin. “He collected a lot of experience in the second Bundesliga and this year proved his quality in the Bundesliga for Frankfurt,”
“He will invigorate the competition for the number-one jersey.”
Wiedwald is yet another young player with whom coach Skripnik has knowledge of from his time with the youth sides. He made eleven appearances for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga this season.
“I am already very well connected to this club and am delighted to be back here at Werder,” said the returning keeper. “I am looking forward to the challenge and will approach it with great enthusiasm.”
The 19-year-old Garcia, signed from Grasshopper Club Zürich, brings the allure of a high upside.
“Ulisses is a very talented, highly enthusiastic player, who has made himself noticed with some very promising performances and has been touted by many other Bundesliga clubs,” reported director of squad planning and scouting Rouven Schröder. “We are very excited that we were able to convince him to continue his development at Werder.”
The Swiss centre-back has represented his national team at the U19 level.
