Tasty DFB Pokal Quarterfinals Next Tuesday and Wednesday

A very tasty slate of matches in the quarterfinal round of the DFB Pokal will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday, with two contests on each day, highlighted by the final match on Wednesday featuring a banged-up Bayern Munich visiting a quite in-form Bayer Leverkusen squad.  All four matches will be streamed live on ESPN 3, while the BvB-Hoffenheim and Bayer-Bayern matches will also be televised on ESPN Deportes.

The first match of the round features 2nd place VfL Wolfsburg hosting SC Freiburg.  Most everything has gone right for the Wolves in their best season since they won the Bundesliga title in 2009, but SC Freiburg have gone deep in the last two Pokals and will be looking to avenge a 3-0 league loss to Dieter Hecking’s squad in mid-March.  The match kicks off at 12:55 pm EDT.

Tuesday’s second match features a BvB squad struggling for its identity against a Hoffenheim side hovering near a Europa League spot in the table.  Jurgen Klopp’s side were too easily ousted by Juventus in Champions League play and will face Bayern Saturday in what is still a big showdown despite BvB’s fall from grace this season, giving Hoffenheim a realistic chance of advancing in the Pokal if they can overcome the atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park.  The contest begins at 2:25 pm EDT.

Wednesday’s first game features a matchup between clubs from the football-rich North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, with Arminia Bielefeld hosting Borussia Mönchengladbach at 12:55 pm EDT. Bielefeld are the only non-first division club remaining among the eight clubs looking to hoist the Cup and play a Gladbach side that pinned a rare defeat on Bayern Munich before the international break and have are third in the Bundesliga table.  But Bielefeld top the 3.Liga and feature the league’s leading scorer, Fabian Klos, who has scored 19 goals this season.  Bielefeld also has knocked out first-division sides Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen to reach the round of eight, so Lucien Favre’s side should go into this matchup with their eyes wide open.

The final match features Bayer Leverkusen hosting a Bayern Munich club that has been victimized by recent injuries to Arjen Robben, David Alaba and Franck Ribery (who is out for Saturday’s BvB matchup) in a season that has seen the Bavarians frequently overcome injuries as they cruise to another Bundesliga title.  But Leverkusen have played well, too, and are downright stingy lately, allowing only one goal in their last seven matches in all competitions.  Pep Guardiola’s Bayern squad are lined up for another possible treble, but getting past this edition of Leverkusen and into the Pokal semifinals may prove to be a task most difficult.  The matchup starts at 2:25 pm EDT.
