Coveted Real Madrid youngster Daniel Carvajal Ramos has signed a five-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen. Greek international Grigoris Makos will be earning his paycheck in Germany this upcoming season at 1860 München, while countryman Nikolaos Papadopoulos has joined Fortuna Düsseldorf. Striker Giovanni Sio, one of the players purchased by Felix Magath last winter break, will be playing on loan this season with FC Augsburg.
Carvajal Joins Bayer Leverkusen from Real Madrid
Bayer Leverkusen have signed 20 year-old right back Daniel ‘Dani’ Carvajal Ramos from Real Madrid on a contract running through June, 2017. The Madrid native was a member of the Spanish U-19 side that won the UEFA championship in 2011 and has played 12 matches for the U-19s. Although the transfer fee will not be disclosed, it is readily apparent that Leverkusen are very excited about the signing. Estimates of the fee hover around the 5 million euro mark.
Said Bayer 04 managing director Wolfgang Holzhäuser.
This transfer has ensured we are in a perfect situation for the future in terms of the important position of right back. Daniel Carvajal is already a great player and has huge potential given his age. He is definitely a top quality signing for us
Sporting Director Rudi Völler
Daniel Carvajal completely suits our style of play. He’s an outstanding player, has great quality going forward and will continue to develop with us. We are happy to have been able to complete the deal
Carvajal played a big role in Real Madrid Castilla (the RM reserve side) rise back up to the Spanish second division following the end of the 2011/2012 season. He was vice-captain of the squad, playing at right back. Carvajal has never played for the senior Real Madrid side, though.
Real Madrid have a buy-back option on Carvajal for the first three seasons of his contract, meaning that Real Madrid would pay an estimated 6.5 million euros if they want the youngster back after one season, 7 million euros after two seasons and approximately 8.5 million euros after his third season. With Leverkusen’s other exciting young right back prospect, 19 year-old Danny Da Costa, loaned for the season to FC Ingolstadt of the second division, Carvajal will get every opportunity to win the starting right back position for Die Werkself.
Makos to 1860 München
Makos, a 25 year-old defensive midfielder, represented his country in this summer’s Euro competitions, and now has been capped 13 times for Greece since 2006. The Athens-born player began his professional career in 2003 with Panionios, where he spent six seasons before joining AEK Athens in June, 2009 on a 800,000 euro transfer. Makos has played 256 matches in all competitions during his career in Greece, scoring 8 goals, and was part of the AEK side that won the Greek Cup in 2011. The transfer fee paid for 6-foot midfielder services is believed to be in the 350,000 euro range, the contract for two years.
F95 Sign Papadopoulos
Goalkeeper Nikolaos Papadopoulos, 23, has signed a two-year contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf, arriving from Olympiakos. The inexperienced youngster will most likely compete for third keeper spot for F95 behind former Leverkusen man Fabian Giefer and Austrian Robert Almer.
Augsburg Borrow Sio
Striker Giovanni Sio will spend the 2012/2013 season on loan from VfL Wolfsburg to FC Augsburg. The Frenchman joined Wolfsburg during last season’s winter transfer window from FC Sion, and appeared in nine matches for the Volkswagen city club. The 23 year-old began his youth career at FC Nantes and scored 17 times in 48 matches for Sion in Swiss league matches before arriving at Wolfsburg.
