It gets serious for Borussia Mönchengladbach and coach Dieter Hecking is highly pleased to have an interesting and talented squad to work with this season.
The training exercises are intensive, the team is physically very far and the integration of the new players runs almost smoothly. The national players have caught up with the rest and coach Hecking builds on the proven structures and dynamics in the team and tries to keep the play clear.
Hecking shapes Borussia according to his taste, but one can safely assume that he is far from wanting to reinvent the Fohlenelf. The fact that he lets train the 3-5-2 formation or 5-3-2 formation is intended as a mere addition to the existing 4-4-2 system and should only open doors to new and enriching possibilities during the game.
The coach leaves no scope for misinterpretations and speaks about positive things objectively and soberly, at the same time he does not talk around the bush with negative developments. If the team misses the bite, as in some preparatory games, Hecking then stands up and talks exactly about that. The coach is authentic and the players appreciate it.
The preparation can be described as neat. It was not perfect, but the team accepted the challenges and delivered satisfactory results. The quality of the opponents was consistently good and the end results were not that important. What counted was the performance and mentality shown on the green.
Dieter Hecking has always pointed out that his players lacked the “last greed” last season. With all the footballing quality it is also essential to go with the proper body language on the pitch.
The first round DFB cup match against Rot-Weiss Essen was an intense fight to begin the season. Borussia Mönchengladbach dominated most parts of the game, but Rot-Weiss Essen managed luckily to score the first goal in the match with a header from Baier (29.). The Fohlenelf could not create a promising situation to score for quite some time, but in the end Jonas Hofmann (79.) and Raffael (82.) manged to score within three minutes and win the game. It was well deserved.
The team showed their confidence, fighting spirit and that the players believe in their own strength. A greater motivation than the Rheinderby against 1.FC Köln at home to start the Bundesliga season is not imaginable.
In the next three weeks we will find out how far Borussia Mönchengladbach really is. After that we will know more about the true potential of the team, because as beautiful as all the forecasts and assessments are, the truth lies in the end on the pitch.
