Only four clubs have won the Bundesliga title since 2005.
Of those four clubs, two of them — Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart — have spent most of the current season among the relegation candidates, while the others — Bayern and Wolfsburg — are comfortably cruising as the league’s current top two, respectively.
As part of an advent calendar-style series of uploads, the Bundesliga’s official YouTube channel posted a 2011-12 match contested by the clubs, perhaps to allow the fan bases of the two proud clubs to truly take a break during the league’s down time and reflect on happier times.
Stuttgart travelled to Signal Iduna Park for their match day 28 meeting with the defending champions having won four of their five preceding matches to climb into a Europa League place. Dortmund, however, hadn’t lost any of their preceding 21 matches, winning 17 of them to build a five-point edge over Bayern heading into the final seven matches of the season.
In case you know nothing about the match, we’ve embedded the video to start beyond the part where the lead-in commentary mentions how many goals were scored among other items, so you can just start where it would have when originally broadcast and will only add that there is good reason this match was selected.
Be transported to happier times for Jürgen Klopp and a very familiar cast including a pre-Man United Shinji Kagawa at the height of his powers, paired with pre-Bayern Robert Lewandowski. Stuttgart, led by Bruno Labbadia, had Vedad Ibisevic and Martin Harnik, but also the pre-Dortmund Julian Schieber.
Borussia Dortmund: Weidenfeller – Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer – Gündogan, Kehl – Blaszczykowski, Kagawa, Großkreutz – Lewandowski
VfB Stuttgart: Ulreich – Sakai, Maza, Niedermeier, Boka – Kvist, Kuzmanovic – Harnik, Hajnal, Schieber – Ibisevic
