Dortmund exit Europe on high after emphatic win against Madrid

by Mark Lovell

Not quite the wondrous miracle that few actually expected but high-drama all the same. Real’s players joyfully celebrated the 2-0 defeat at the final whistle as they might when winning ‘El Clasico’ in the Nou Camp, Barcelona.

Games can change on fine margins and Real clearly struggled to come to terms with Angel di Maria’s penalty ‘miss’ just after the quarter of an hour mark. Dortmund, on the other hand, were given a new lease of life by long-serving goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller’s brilliant save. It wasn’t really a penalty miss as such, rather a magnificent athletic stop from Germany’s most recently capped glovesman.

Marco Reus helped himself to a couple of goals (24, 37) and the Madrid backline were soon swamped and started to wobble. Roared on by the Yellow Wall, the home side started to actually believe that the miracle was indeed possible. The illustrious visitors were palpably shell-shocked and consumed with fear.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will have nightmares about his finishing efforts on the night, typified when with twenty five minutes left ‘Micky’ expertly rounded Casillas in the Madrid goal but could only fire against the post. Shortly after, it again seemed easier for the Armenian to score but he fired straight at the over-worked keeper.

So Madrid breath a massive sigh of relief and live to fight another day, and will be bolstered by the returning Ronaldo who warmed the bench all night on a blustery night in Westphalia.

Dortmund’s proud coach Jürgen Klopp enthused: “You could make a video out of this game as an example to sides that lose a first leg 3-0 to show that anything is still possible.

“My players were hungry to go through but we were missing that that away goal we failed to score in Madrid.

“The lads gave it everything they had and I have no idea how many kilometres they ran.”
