DFB Pokal Quarterfinals Tuesday and Wednesday

Eight German sides will compete Tuesday and Wednesday this week to advance to the semifinals of the DFB Pokal.  Two matches will be played each day.

Tuesday’s matches feature 3. Liga side SC Paderborn 07 hosting Bundesliga rekordmeisters FC Bayern Munich (streamed on ESPN 3 beginning at 11:25 am–also televised on ESPN Deportes).  The second match features 2nd place Bayer 04 Leverkusen hosting Werder Bremen streamed at 1:40 pm.

On Wednesday, Eintracht Frankdurt will host 1.FSV Mainz at 11:25 am, streamed on ESPN 3 and televised on ESPN Deportes.  The final match of the semifinals features FC Schalke 04 hosting VfL Wolfsburg, with the ESPN 3 stream kicking off at 1:40 pm. (All kickoff times are US CST).

Six of the clubs in the semifinals have been Pokal champions in the past.  Bayern Munich, of course, are the record titleists, winning 18 Pokals, including one two years ago and three of the last five, and are likely to advance playing a club from the 3rd division, even if Paderborn are leading 3. Liga.   Werder Bremen have won the Pokal six times, Schalke five and Eintracht Frankfurt four times (and they made last year’s final only to lose to Borussia Dortmund).  Wolfsburg won their only Pokal in 2015, and even ‘never’ Leverkusen actually have lifted the trophy once, in 1993.  Leverkusen, Schalke and Eintracht Frankfurt have been in generally good form this season, and Werder Bremen comes off one of their biggest victories of the season over the weekend, when they downed the Royal Blues at the end of stoppage time.
