Dear Neven Subotic: Please Stay!

Bourssia Dortmund’s number 4, who spent half of the season on loan at Carnival City, is spending his summer vacation in Ethiopia, again. Why you ask? I cordially invite you to read the two part of my “Neven Subotic: More Than Just a Footballer.”

But I’m not here to talk about how he is spending his off time. I’m just here to put on my fan boy mask and try to make a case of why the Serbian Center Back should stay at Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately the last time I wrote a similar piece it was about Thomas Tuchel and it did not end well (tears in my eyes).

I won’t let that bring me down because Peter Bosz is the new sheriff in town and maybe, just maybe he will find a way to integrate Suba into his line up. So without further ado here are 5 reasons of why he should stay at the Signal Iduna Park.

Reason 1# Class Is Permanent

Subotic is not the player he once was. That partnership with Mats Hummels especially from 2010 to 2013 is one of the best in recent memory. He had leadership, strength in the air and a great tackle. However, if there’s anything we’ve learned from his stint at Cologne is the fact that he still has that ability of organizing the defense. He played an important role in Peter Stöger’s push for European Football which came to fruition when the Billy Goats finished 5th, ending a 25 year wait for continental football.

Reason 2# BVB Fans Adore Him

Well why wouldn’t they? He’s a terrific person. He is charming, passionate and loves the club dearly. Remember his reaction when Arjen Robben missed THAT penalty against BVB in 2012? The penalty which eventually decided the title race in the Black and Yellows favour? Yep!

That’s exactly the type of thing that makes you a fan favourite. ‘Poor’ Subotic got a test of his own medicine a year later though.   Jerome Boateng shouted in his face after Bayern won the 2013 Champions League final. What goes around comes around!

What about that spine tingling reception he got from the Yellow Wall when he faced his parent club in a rival shirt? One of the most emotional moments of the season and was only bettered by Marc Bartra’s comeback and Totti’s Roma farewell. I’m tearing up again!

Reason 3# Good Dressing Room Guy

Borussia Dortmund has a lot of young and exciting players in the team. While that’s a good thing the lads need to have a strong character and role model alongside them. Just like Ousmane Dembele has Aubameyang new Center back Dan-Axel Zagadou and Mikel Merino are players who can be benefited by Subotic’s presence.

4# Lingering Defensive Problems at BVB

We’ve heard it a thousand times ‘If only BVB had a better defence…’ and ‘If only the players knew how to defend…’ Well if there’s anyone who knows how to defend it is Neven Subotic! Omer Toprak is also arriving from Leverkusen to bolster the backline.

Sokratis has been a consistent performer for the black and yellows. Marc Bartra has shown great improvement in his first season. But there has always been a question around BVB’s defending? New Manager Peter Bosz has a big task on his hands. Subotic may not be a regular starter or won’t be able to solve the problems all on his own but he will definitely help.

5# Because I Said So

I have tried my best to look at the whole situation objectively but bottom line is Subotic staying is more of hope than a reality. There are players you just love and want to see at your club forever. But that doesn’t happen, does it? BVB fans have already said goodbye to Kuba. How painful that was! And sadly the same is likely to happen with Subotic. With Toprak, Zagadou, Sokratis, Bartra and Bender there just looks to be no room in the squad for him.

So… what can we say? Except Neven Subotic: We Want To Stay!
