Bundesliga Transfer News: Macheda to Stuttgart and more
VfB Stuttgart have gotten their man, at least temporarily. Rumored to be a Stuttgart signing for several weeks, Italian U-21 striker Federico Macheda has joined the Swabians on loan until the end of the season from Manchester United. In other recent transfer news, Hoffenheim have brought in Parma midfielder Afriyie Acquah to help in their relegation fight, while defender Berkay Debanli of Kayserispor has been added by 1. FC Nurnberg. Longtime German-based Canadian international Rob Friend will be joining his fourth German club as he moves to 1860 München while Eintracht Frankfurt teammate Dorge Kouhemaha heads to Turkey. In other transfer news, both Wolfsburg and FC Augsburg have made moves to reduce their rosters.
Macheda Joins VfB
Stuttgart have been looking for depth at the striker position behind the club’s leading scorer, Vedad Ibišević, and hope they’ve found the right man in Manchester United’s Federico Macheda. The Roman striker, 21, began his career with Lazio youth system before moving to the U-18 squad at Manchester United in 2007. He made his senior team debut against Aston Villa in April, 2009 as a substitute brought on at the hour mark and ended up scoring the game-winner that day for the Red Devils. The 6’1″ striker has totaled 56 matches in England and Italy, playing on loan for Sampdoria and Queens Park Rangers, scoring six goals.
Fredi Bobic, Stuttgart Sporting Director, commented
We wanted to sign a striker and we’re pleased to have found one now in Federico Macheda from Manchester United. Federico is young and hungry for success, so he therefore fits in very well here in Stuttgart. He comes from a top European club and has already proven himself there. We now want to integrate him into the team as quickly as possible.
Macheda, who has featured 24 for Italian national youth sides, reportedly will be available for this weekend’s big match against Bayern München, a fixture that Stuttgart have found much too challenging in recent times. Stuttgart will also have Ibišević back this week after the Bosnian had to sit out last week’s shutout loss to Wolfsburg.
Hoffenheim Add Parma’s Afriyie Acquah
Ebenezer Afriyie Acquah has signed with Hoffenheim from Italian side Parma, on a contract through June, 2017.. The 21 year-old Ghanian midfielder joined Serie A club Palermo in 2010 from DC United of Ghana. He made his senior team debut with the Sicilian side on February 23, 2011 against Fiorentina. The 5’10” midfielder was loaned to Parma this past summer, and has featured in a total of 50 matches in all competitions while in Italy.
Compared by former Palermo Sporting Director Walter Sabatini to Ghanian legend Michael Essien, Acquah made his international debut for Ghana’s senior team against Chile last February, and scored a goal against Malawi in his other senior team appearance. Hoffenheim’s Andreas Muller expects Acquah to be able to bolster the club’s midfield despite his youth.
Dabanli Heads to Nürnberg
Frankfurt native Berkay Dabanli was signed to a contract by 1. FC Nurnberg through June, 2013 after training with the club for several days. The club will hold an option to extend the 22 year-old defender’s contact for another two years after its expiration.
Dabanli 6’3,” is a German-Turk who has played with Turkish side Kayserispor since 2010 and has made eight appearances for the SuperLig side this season. Before leaving for Turkey, Dabanli played for the reserve teams at FSV Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen. He is generally considered a central defender, but also has played at right back.
Nurnberg’s Martin Bader stated
Berkay has made the most of his chance in the past few days. He is a young, talented player that fits in with the philosophy of the club. He’s a versatile defender who will help us compensate for the injury-enforced absence of Marcos Antonio.
Eintracht Frankfurt Dispatch Two Strikers
Surprising Eintracht Frankfurt, who have had a remarkable bounce-back 2012/2013 season following promotion from the second division, have transferred out two strikers, veterans Rob Friend and Dorge Kouhemaha, who have been surplus to their needs this season.
Friend, 32, will head to 1860 München. The tall striker has played over 125 matches in Germany since 2007 for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hertha Berlin and Eintracht, scoring 36 times, but has not played with the Die Adler’s first team this season. The Canadian, who has earned 32 caps for his country, was about to accept an offer to play in MLS with the Vancouver Whitecaps before accepting the loan deal with the Lions, which runs through June, 2014. In other 1860 news, backup goalkeeper Timo Ochs has signed with SSV Jahn Regensburg until the end of the season. The newly promoted club sit at the bottom of the table of the 2. Bundesliga table.
Kouhemaha. 29, started the season on loan with Eintracht Frankfurt from Club Brugge, after finishing a loan spell last season with 1.FC Kaiserslautern. The Cameroonian international will play on loan in the Turkish SuperLig with the Falcons of Gaziantepspor after appearing only twice for Eintracht this fall.
In the Volkswagen City, VfL Wolfsburg made a reduction to their huge player roster by cutting ties with Croatian left back Hroje Cale, who only played once since joining the club in 2011. Meanwhile in Bavaria, FC Augsburg released Gambian winger Dawda Bah, who suffered a bad knee injury after joining the club in 2011 and featured only once.
