Looking to build its attacking arsenal, RB Leipzig announced that they have signed 19 year-old striker Matheus Cunha from FC Sion. The teen, who doesn’t turn 20 until next May, signed a contract with Leipzig through June, 2023 and was obtained for a transfer fee of £13.5 million.
The 2017/2018 Swiss Super League season was the debut in senior squad competition for the Brazilian, who joined FC Sion last July from the U20 squad of Coritiba FC , and he proved quickly that he was capable of goal-scoring success.
After not seeing action in Sion’s first three league matches last season, Cunha got a start on MD 4, and scored his first goal in Switzerland against FC Basel on MD 6. The attacker, who stands 1.84 m tall, went on to total ten goals in 29 Super League goals while contributing eight assists. He finished the season strong, with a hat trick against FC Thun in the season finale. Cunha started 24 league matches, while coming on as a sub in another five. He not only showed the ability to adapt quickly to senior squad competition, but the versatility to compete at multiple positions — he played 11 matches on the right wing, ten as a center forward, four as a secondary striker and twice on the left wing. He was most productive form the center forward spot, notching six goals and four assists.
Leipzig Sporting Director Ralf Rangnick tweeted
#Cunha is a very interesting striker, who with his age, his speed and his offense fits very well into our philosophy. Especially in the gate, he shows great qualities.
Cunha is the third player signing of the offseason for Leipzig, who had previously inked left-back Marcelo Saracchi of Argentine record champions River Plate and French defender Nordi Mukiele of HSC Montpellier, both 20 years-old. The biggest signing of Leipzig’s offseason, though, is that of Hoffenheim Coach Julian Nagelsmann, who will take over the coaching reins for the Saxony club beginning with the 2019/2020 season.
Leipzig will compete in the Europa League during the upcoming season and have drawn FC Victoria Köln as their August first round opponent. The club’s Bundesliga schedule, which begins the weekend of August 24, will be known this upcoming Friday when the DFL releases the 2018/2019 fixture list.
