As the Bundesliga enters the home straight there has been no let-up in the action with the best players trying to push their teams forward to reach season goals. Whether it is the Champions League places or just Bundesliga survival, the football on display has been nothing short of excellent (as you’d expect of Europe’s best league !)
So just who has got the nod for our Player and Goal of the Month awards for February?
Player of the Month: Andrej Kramarić
When Hoffenheim striker Andrej Kramarić scored in both of his sides’ opening Bundesliga fixtures he could have been forgiven for believing that this could be the season he really stamps his mark on the Bundesliga. What followed though was an 18-match goal scoring drought.
Finally on matchday 21 the Croatian broke his barren spell with a penalty in the 1-1 draw against Hertha Berlin. A week later he bagged a brace as Hoffenheim beat Mainz 4-2. The second of his pair was a stunning free-kick to cap a fine display. One witty commentator likened Kramarić to a bottle of ketchup- you wait ages and there’s nothing and suddenly…..sauce everywhere!
His February scoring burst continued on matchday 23 as he headed in a consolation goal at the Veltins Arena in a 2-1 defeat to Schalke. The next game brought yet another goal and another stunning direct free-kick to help share the spoils with Freiburg in a 1-1 draw.
Four games in February, five goals and after the drought came the flood.
Honourable mentions for the Player of the Month award go to Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus who made a return to action after his log injury lay-off in spectacular fashion with goals against both Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Augsburg.
Kramarić’s Hoffenheim team-mate Serge Gnabry also enjoyed a fine month showing his versatility in both attack and as a wing-back for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Goal of the Month: Iver Fossum
February was a month absolutely jam-packed with amazing goals in the Bundesliga so the decision over the Goal of the Month was a very difficult one. After much deliberation it is Hannover’s Iver Fossum, who takes the award.
His great strike on matchday 21 against Hamburg was straight from the top draw. A corner from the right was headed out to edge of the penalty area, where the Norwegian U-21 international took the ball down on his chest before unleashing an unstoppable volley past Christian Mathenia.
Honourable mentions for the Goal of the Month are numerous. Florian Kainz’s goal for Werder Bremen against Wolfsburg was superb, Marco Reus scored a fantastic comeback goal against Mönchengladbach, while both James and Franck Ribéry scored stunners for Bayern.
Vincent Koziello scored an absolute gem on his first start for Köln against RB Leipzig, and Christoph Kramer ended Gladbach’s four game goal drought with a real belter against Hannover.
