As the Bundesliga returns from its Winterpause, it is time too for the return of the Bundesliga Fanatic Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards. We have seen three matchdays in January deliver yet more excitement, thrilling football, stand-out performers as well as stunning goals.
So just who has got the nod for our Player and Goal of the Month awards for January?
Player of the Month: Robert Lewandowski
So consistent has Bayern’s striker been this season that he would have been a deserving winner of any of the previous season awards, but he has finally got the recognition following an impressive January.
The Polish goal-machine was forced to sit out the matchday 18 clash with Bayer Leverkusen, but returned with important goals in both the subsequent games for the Bavarians as they continued their imperious march to another Bundesliga title.
A double against Werder Bremen saw the 29-year-old give Bayern the lead after Jerome Gondorf’s shock opener. He then scored his second to restore Bayern’s lead after Niklas Süle’s own goal had allowed the visitors back into the game.
Last weekend saw Bayern once again forced to come from behind at the Allianz Arena after Hoffenheim had raced into a 2-0 lead. His predatory finish was the catalyst for a great comeback and he then added an assist for Kingsley Coman to make it 3-2 for Jupp Heynckes’ side. He has now scored 18 goals in 19 games so far this season and will be glad to see the back of his main rival for the Torjägerkanone Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. His goal against Hoffenheim meant he had scored in his tenth consecutive home game this season, becoming just the fifth player in Bundesliga history to do so.
Honourable mentions for the Player of the Month award go to Leon Bailey (again!) for his continuing brilliance at Leverkusen. Lewandowski’s team mates at Bayern Jerome Boateng and James Rodriguez also had good months.
Goal of the Month: Nils Petersen
The winner of December’s Player of the Month award Nils Petersen returns as the winner of January’s Goal of the Month for his incredible effort against Borussia Dortmund.
Not content with scoring an impressive first to equalise Shinji Kagawa’s opener, the Freiburg hit-man scored an even better second midway through the second half to put the Breisguaer infront at the Signal-Iduna Park.
He read Nuri Sahin’s intentions and latched onto a poor touch from the Dortmund midfielder. In one movement, he spotted Bürki off his line and from fully 30 meters launched an audacious lob goalwards. The precision of his effort was a thing of beauty and his spectacular effort flew into the net for will no doubt be a serious contender for Goal of the Season.
Honourable mentions for the Goal of the Month go to Leon Bailey (yes him again!) for his outrageous back-heeled goal against Hoffenheim and his stunner against Mainz. Two free-kicks complete the list with James Rodriguez’s precision effort against Leverkusen and Maxi Arnold’s bamboozler scored against Frankfurt.
