A Tribute to Marcelinho- A Hertha Berlin Legend!

He was a player with so much finesse and flair.

He is one of the greatest Brazilians to grace the Bundesliga. Marcelo dos Santos, simply Marcelinho, will live long in the memory of Hertha Berlin fans. He was an important figure in one of the club’s successful eras, in which they won the DFB Pokal in 2001 and 2002.

Marcelinho was a player that immediately catches your eye. The first thing you noticed was his ornately decorated hair and that was followed by his special boots and long strikes. And finally the celebration dance. He was an attacking midfielder by trade but could be deployed in a forward role. His shooting abilities meant he was responsible for taking the set pieces for Hertha.

His time in Berlin was not only about titles and goals though. His lack of discipline has seen him fined by the club on several occasions. In 2003, he went out the night before a match against Hamburg and before the 2006-07 season, he decided to extend his vacation by nine days.

In total, the Brazilian scored 77 goals and recorded 67 assists in 205 Bundesliga games. He played for Wolfsburg for a while after joining from Turkish club Trabzonspor in 2007. His illustrious career has taken him to France and several clubs in Brazil. Now 42, Marcelinho is still playing football. He is currently at Brazilian club Treze Futebol Clube after joining them on Dec 23, 2017.

On March 2017, Hertha Berlin organized a farewell football match for the legend. Speaking at the event Van Burik, former defender of Hertha Berlin from 1997-2007, was full of praise for Marcelinho:

‘He is the best I’ve ever played with. And I played in Holland with Ajax Amsterdam with Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, and Frank Rijkaard. Real grenades, but when I see how important Marcelinho was for Hertha – just unique! Great to meet him and the many other stars from the past back on the field. ”

Compliments don’t get any better than that!

In the testimonial match van Burik played in the Hertha team against “Brazil & Friends”, a team made up of top strikers like Giovanne Elber, Ailton, and Kevin Kuranyi.

Marcelinho is a player you will instantly like and it is certain that Hertha fans have fond memories of him. Even though he wasn’t able to replicate his club form atthe international level, he will still be remembered as one of the best Brazilians of his generation and a true Hertha Legend.

  1. Him and Schalke 04 Lincoln were guys with flair. Strange they never played for big clubs. Even Bayern Munich never considered them. Bayern bought Elber from Stuttgart though.
