RB Leipzig’s Intriguing Attacker Bruma

RB Leipzig’s new signing Bruma has  impressed so far this season with his skill, pace and some great goals. Arrived from Galatasaray, the Portuguese starlet has really been making professional defenders look like little kids with his amazing skill and dribbling technique. Aswell as great skill moves he can also bang some good goals in! We can see this when he scored an absolute belter of a goal into the top corner against SC Freiburg on MatchDay 2. What a way to open one’s Bundesliga goals account.

Sporting CP

Bruma (birth name: Armindo Tué Na Bangna) started his footballing career when signing for the Youth Ranks of Sporting Lisbon at the age of 13. He played numerous games for the youth teams, scoring more than 80 goals. Dubbed as the next Cristiano Ronaldo, he went on to make his professional =debut in February 2013, at the age of 18,- for Sporting’s first team against CS Marítimo. He scored his first goal for SCP’s senior squad a week later against Gil Vincente.

On September 3rd 2013, Bruma reaches an agreement to join Turkish outfit Galatasaray on a five year deal following a contract dispute with Sporting. The deal was worth 10 million euros. He made his debut ten days later after coming on as a sub in a 1:1 draw against Antalyaspor. He made his Champions League debut in a bitter 6:1 loss against Real Madrid. He played just 30 minutes. Bruma first contributed to the club assisting in the derby against Beşiktaş SK. Galatasaray ended up winning that game 2:1. On the 18th of December 2013, he scored his first goal in Galatasaray colors in a 4-0 Turkish Cup win against Balikesirspor.

A month later he sustained a serious knee injury that kept him out for pretty much the rest of the season He was loaned out to Gaziantepspor for a season and made no appearances, and then was  loaned out to Real Sociedad for the 2015/2016 season, playing 32 games, scoring twice and creating one assist. He returned to Galatasaray for the 2016/17 season scoring 11 times in 29 appearances, earning a place in the Süper Lig team of the season.

Bruma is an attacking player with great skill and pace with the ability to score some quality goals. He is a winger but also plays in a number 10 role, and so far in his ten league appearances (five starts, five off the bench) for RBL, has played in the center for the most part,  while featuring four times on the right. and once as a secondary striker. He always looks for as much space as possible on the field, and knows how to take advantage from this as well.

The 23 year-old is the type of player who is always available for the ball. He prefers to cut inside and pick out passes for strikers, particularly short passes. When he had the ball at his feet he is a nightmare for defenders, he makes them look like schoolboy footballers, leaving them clueless. As a result of this he scored some good goals in the 2013 U20 World Cup, netting five times in four matches for Portugal. And while being a great dribbler may be his best attribute at this time, his passing has been quality, too, as he’s getting the ball to his teammates at a 79% success rate, and he’s also good at holding onto the ball.

The Bundesliga newcomer has shown some weaknesses, though.  Bruma has not yet proven that he can be a consistent finisher for Leipzig with only one goal on 12 shots in league play and no goals in four Champions League appearances and one in the Pokal  Another weakness is that he has a bad temper and loses control of himself easily, perhaps due to his young age, although to his credit he hasn’t been carded yet.   Bruma doesn’t like a hard, crunching tackle. Defenders have noticed this and started putting in heavy tackles on him and he is not good at avoiding them. He is a tempting target for defenders and they always man mark him and throw in crunching tackles left, right and centre.

As I said he is a great dribbler and in my opinion that is his best attribute. He makes it hard for defenders and has a quick change of direction. When defending a counter attack he always works so hard to try and get back to help. This is the attitude I like, coming back from long distances to try and save his side from conceding.

In my opinion Leipzig found a brilliant player with great potential in Bruma. The future certainly looks intriguing for the youngster with a top club like RB Leipzig.
