Bundesliga: Match Day 13 Predictions
The Ruhr Valley Derby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke is the standout match as another weekend of Bundesliga thrill closes in. In this piece I will predict the scores of the match day and try to reason out why I said so. If any of you are playing the Prediction Game on the Bundesliga’s official website and proved you are brilliant at foreseeing scores feel free to do so in the comment section. The Bundesliga is one of the most unpredictable leagues in the world (don’t respond with the ‘Bayern always wins’ thing). This makes the prediction section very hard but here I am taking the challenge with enthusiasm and a sting of ‘uh oh’.
Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke
For the first time since it has been so long I can’t even remember Schalke are going in to the derby as favourites. You could say the game between the two during BVB’s horrendous 2014/15 season was when Schalke last favourites. However, Borussia Dortmund were starting to wake up from their Hinrunde slumber and had momentum with them going into that match. That was proved on the pitch as Klopp’s men outplayed their neighbours on the way to a 3-0 win. We were treated to the ‘Batmanyang-Robin’ showcase that day (Good Times)! But now the force is with Schalke. Under the guidance of their young and bright manager Domenico Tedesco the Royal Blues sit in 2nd place 3 points ahead of Peter Bosz’s ‘not so Avenger’ Squad.
BVB’s famed home form has gone out the window with losses to RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Tottenham this season. As such, that no longer can be used as leverage for the Black and Yellows. Nonetheless, this is a Derby and Bosz’s job hinges on this game so I expect the players to fight like never before but in the end to struggle to breakdown the organized defense of Schalke, which has only conceded 10 goals in the league bettered only by Bayern who gave away 8.
Borussia M’Gladbach vs Bayern
Hecking’s men have been the most unpredictable team in the Bundesliga this season. They have lost 6-1 to BVB and 5-1 to Leverkusen but managed to beat Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim. What is going on with this bunch? Gladbach also are not Bayern’s favourite opponents. The Bavarians have a rather poor record at the Borussia Park.
I honestly have no idea what to expect from the Foals. Will they beat Bayern 3-1 like they did under Andrea Schubert during the 2015/16 season? Will they keep it tight and secure a draw like last season? Or will they get thumbed as happened against B04 and BVB?
Bayern will miss midfield maestro Thiago after injury sustained in Wednesday’s UCL game. However, even with Thiago’s unfortunate Champions League injury, Jupp’s men have depth and Coco Tolisso is hitting top form. He will come into Saturday’s Blockbuster with confidence after his goal and assist against Anderlecht. There is also that man Lewandowski who has 13 goals in the league already.
Prediction- 2-1 win for Bayern
Hannover 96- Stuttgart
Friday Night’s game matches up two promoted sides. Hannover had a brilliant start to their campaign but have lost their last two games to RB Leipzig and Werder Bremen. They have lost 4 of their last 6 – but of course defeated Dortmund – and have just 6 points to show for those matches.
Stuttgart have beaten relegation-threatened Cologne and Freiburg as well as Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in their last game and so are favourites going into this.
Prediction- 1-0 win for Stuttgart
RB Leipzig – SV Werder Bremen
RB Leipzig are on a high after their remarkable 4-1 away victory against Monaco. Timo Werner got 2 goals and Naby Keita put his name on the score sheet with a wonderfully taken shot. Their Saturday opponents are also joyful with their first win of the season coming last Sunday against H96. Max Kruse grabbed a hat-trick in that game and look to be the man to rescue his team from relegation threats. But I think the class of RBL will be too much for Bremen.
Prediction- 2-0 win for RBL
Sport-Club Freiburg – 1. FSV Mainz 05
After another summer of losing their star players to bigger clubs, Freiburg are struggling in the league, having lost 4 of their last 5. They now sit 17th and entertain a Mainz side who after losing 4 of their first 5 matches, are looking much steadier under their new manager Sandro Schwarz .
Prediction- 2-1 win for Mainz
Eintracht Frankfurt – Bayer 04 Leverkusen
7th vs 9th will meet at the Commerzbank Arena, with both teams unbeaten in their last six matches! Leverkusen seem to have put away their stuttering display of last season and look an exciting team again. Their young crops are putting on some lovely football. Leon Bailey is on form and Kevin Volland has found his scoring boots, with the two having combined for 11 goals thus far. But Frankfurt are a tough nut to crack at home, where they are unbeaten in their last 3 matches. (Not to mention securing 12 points – the second most behind Bayern so far on the road!)
Prediction-a 1-1 draw
FC Augsburg – VfL Wolfsburg
Finally the sweet test of victory for The Wolves! After 7 consecutive draws Martin Schmidt’s men grabbed their first win of the season against Freiburg. And I believe they will continue that against Augsburg, who have quietly just won one of their last six matches (3-0 in Bremen)
2-0 win for Wolfsburg
Hamburger SV – TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
And another gloomy season for Hamburg in which they will look to avoid the drop. They sit in 15th place after their 2-0 loss to Schalke. While their fountain of youth (Ito, Arp) has given them a spark, injuries in the midfield (Ekdal, Walace) could be troubling. Even Markus Gisdol is down with the flu, as is Andre Hahn, though his absence has not been felt lately.
Hoffenheim will want to get back to winning ways after their draw against Frankfurt, where they needed a 92nd minute equalizer from their talisman, Mark Uth. They also have their difficulties with a tough Europa League match in Braga where they travelled without Kevin Akpoguma, Benni Hübner and Sandro Wagner, the latter two likely missing the match against HSV.
Prediction- 2-0 win for Hoffenheim
Köln – Hertha BSC
Things are going terribly for the Billy Goats. They are in 18th place with only two points and no wins. The good news for them is Hertha Berlin aren’t in their best moment either. They lost at home to ‘Gladbach last week and face Stöger’s men after a Europa League trip to Spain which can take its toll on their fitness.
Let’s hear your predictions!
