A Borussia Dortmund player grabbed the Bundesliga Fanatic Player of the Month award for August with Christian Pulisic coming out on top, and the Schwarzgelben have done it again with a clean sweep of the September awards.
So just who have won the Player and Goal of the Month awards for September?
Player of the Month: Maximilian Philipp (Borussia Dortmund)
Of all the big summer signings in the Bundesliga, there were plenty of players predicted to have a huge and immediate impact, but few were tipping Borussia Dortmund’s Maximilian Philipp to be the one.
He has however settled straight into the BVB first team and enjoyed a fantastic September to take the Player of the Month award here at the Fanatic. Following his €20 million move from Freiburg, the 23-year-old has become a key figure in Dortmund’s near perfect start to the season.
Against both Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach he scored twice and could even have had a hat trick against the Föhlen only to selflessly square the ball for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score. A brilliant header and a cute finish against Köln were impressive, but the pick of his four goals has to be the volley that started the rout against Mönchengladbach.
“Just wow! He has adapted to a new club at such speed,” Dortmund legend Matthias Sammer explained while talking on Eurosport.
“He plays very, very creatively. He is intelligent and cautious. He is also very easy on his feet. This all works very nicely, it is wonderful to look at. But what I have noticed for some time is that he is very disciplined, is integrated into the system.”
Probably the biggest compliment you can pay Philipp is that with him in the side, Dortmund have not missed talismanic forward Marco Reus, who is injured and won’t return until 2018.
Honourable mentions for Player of the Month go to Robert Lewandowski for his five goals in five games in September, while Jean-Kevin Augustin also gets a nod for the way he has impressed at RB Leipzig scoring twice.
Goal of the Month: Shinji Kagawa (v FC Augsburg)
It’s a one-two for Dortmund as Shinji Kagawa’s goal against FC Augsburg takes the September award. With the score at 1-1 at the WWK Arena Dortmund got in down the right with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang profiting from some slack defending; He played the ball to Andriy Yarmolenko, who instantly squared to ball to Kagawa.
The Japanese midfielder produced an exquisite lob from inside the penalty box showing great vision and technique to loft the ball over a stationary Marwin Hitz. The goal was Kagawa’s 38th in the Bundesliga making him his countries all-time leading scorer in German football.
素晴 (the Japanese for superb)
Honourable mentions for August’s Goal of the Month go to Timo Werner for his superb run and finish against Hamburg, while Frankfurt’s Sebastien Haller can consider himself very unlucky not to have won with his bicycle kick winner against Hannover.
