Granted there were only two matchdays during August, but here at the Fanatic, we’ve decided on our first winners of the Player and Goal of the Month awards. A snap poll amongst the writers here has seen two very deserving players earning the plaudits for the season’s opening month.
Player of the Month: Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund)
Many people tipped US midfielder Pulisic to have a breakout season this year following a number of impressive displays last season and on the evidence of the first two games, they are spot on.
Two wins from two games has seen the Schwarzgelben open the season impressively and taken some of the attention away from the sale of Ousmane Dembélé and Pulisic certainly looks like a player enjoying the new start under Peter Bosz. Take Dembélé out of the equation and the 20-year-old was BVB’s leader for assists with eight.
The US international began August by scoring in the Supercup against Bayern, although ultimately losing on penalties. The season opener away at Wolfsburg saw Pulisic on the scoresheet once again rifling in a great opener before putting the ball on a tee for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score Dortmund’s third.
Matchday 2 saw another fine performance where alongside Nuri Şahin, he was arguably BVB’s best player in a 2-0 win that put them top of the league. Much has been made of Dortmund’s chances in the post-Dembélé age, but if Pulisic can maintain the form he has shown during August, the Dortmunder should be fine.
So far he’s enjoyed an 84% pass accuracy, 67% shot accuracy and has created 4 chances over the first two Bundesliga 2017/2018 matches.
Honourable mentions for Player of the Month go to Pulisic’s teammate Marc Bartra, Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Bellarabi and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.
Goal of the Month: Bruma (v SC Freiburg)
RB Leipzig fans should not really have been surprised at the quality of the strike that put the icing on the cake for their 4-1 win over SC Freiburg on Matchday 2 as Portuguese youngster Bruma has form.
You only have to look at the recent U21 European Championship to see that the summer signing from Galatasaray makes a habit of this kind of thing (and if anything it was an even better strike than this one).
Introduced by trainer Ralph Hasenhüttl in the 76th minute with RB 3-1 up, Bruma took just two minutes to introduce himself to the Bundesliga with a fantastic strike.
Serial assist-meister Emil Forsberg floated a great cross-field pass onto the head of Marcel Halstenberg, but his cushioned header to Bruma fell behind the substitute. Not deterred, the Leipzig new boy swivelled on the spot before rifling home a right-footed golazzo into the top corner leaving keeper Alexander Schwolow no chance.
Pulisic’ goal on MatchDay 1, along with Marc Bartra’s perfectly aimed goal that day, also received consideration, along with Nuri Sahin’s blast and the efforts of Robert Lewandowski. Feel free to submit your favorite Bundesliga goals of August in our comments section.
