DFB Pokal Round 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday

The second round of the DFB Pokal, the German Cup competition, will be played this week on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Thirty-two clubs will compete, with only sixteen survivors.

Two of the biggest matches occur on Wednesday, as Bayern Munich host FC Augsburg in a Bavarian derby — and FCA has generally competed well against their neighbors.  Also on Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund welcome FC Union Berlin, one of the more popular clubs in Bundesliga 2.  Bayern and Dortmund have met three times in the Pokal finals in the last five years — with Bayern coming out champions in their last two final matchups.

But there are other interesting Round 2 matchups, too.  On Tuesday, suddenly limp Bayer Leverkusen play away to Sportfreunde Lotte, a 3.Ligs team playing well.  Struggling VfL Wolfsburg travel to the small town of Heidenheim, but FCH have been having a strong year in Germany’s 2nd division, currently ranked third in the table, and would seem perfectly capable of upsetting the Wolves..  First division sides Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Ingolstadt meet at the Commerzbank Arena, with FCI having to turn around after their heartbreaking draw Saturday with Borussia Dortmund in which American Christian Pulisic knocked in the late equalizer for BvB.  Borussia Monchengladbach host demoted VfB Stuttgart, who will be all out trying to show that they should be playing in the first division.

On Wednesday, besides the Bayern and Dortmund matches, there will be a clash of two strong Bundesliga sides as 1.FC Köln host upstart Hoffenheim and their young manager, Julian Nagelsmann, while Schalke look to continue their turnaround by beating 1.FC Nürnberg in Bavaria.

For American viewers, ESPN 3 will stream the Tuesday’s Lotte-Leverkusen match at 12:55 pm EDT and the Gladbach-Stuttgart tilt at 2:40pm EDT — both matches will also be televised on ESPN Deportes.  On Wednesday, ESPN 3 features the Bayern-FCA and the BvB-Union Berlin matches kicking off at 2:40pm EDT.  The Bayern match will be shown on ESPN Deportes.

  1. I’m looking forward to the Mönchengladbach vs VfB game! Hannes Wolf is getting Stuttgart playing well (Apart from the Dresden game) and they can cause ‘gladbach some problems.
