American Jordan Morris Turns Down Werder Bremen Offer

The saga of American Jordan Morris joining Werder Bremen instead of hometown club the Seattle Sounders is over, at least for now. Werder Bremen announced on its website that the 21 year-old plans his immediate professional playing future in the United States.  The Seattle Sounders of MLS own the rights of the Seattle native.

Morris has been on trial with Werder Bremen and speculation was rampant that Morris would sign an offer with the north German side, with the club previously stating that it was just a matter of “when” the attacker would ink a deal to play in the Bundesliga.  But apparently Morris will sign with the Sounders, whom he played for as a U23.

Werder Bremen CEO Thomas Eichen, however, does not rule out a future deal with the American international, who recently decided to turn professional after three years of play at NCAA champion Stanford University. Morris made a very positive impression during his trial.  Said Eichen

Following intense talks, the player made clear that he currently sees his future in America.Of course, we respect this decision.

We’re in a situation now where we need players who identify with Werder and the way things are done here completely, in order for them to focus properly on the task ahead.

For this reason, we are distancing ourselves from a transfer for the time being, but we will remain in close contact with him and are entertaining the idea of working together in the future.

In other Werder Bremen news, the club announced the signing of former Bremen man Lennart Thy from FC. St. Pauli.  Thy, 23, came up in the green-whites system and played briefly for the senior squad before leaving for St. Pauli in 2012 on a loan deal that was eventually made permanent, and has played in nearly 100 games for the Hamburg club in Germany’s 2nd division.  Thy rejected an offer from St. Pauli and will begin his second stint with Werder in the summer after inking a three-year deal with the club.

Additionally, ESPN FC reports that Werder Bremen are quite interested in a loan deal for Chelsea central defender Papy Djilobodji.  The 27 year-old Senegalese international signed with the Blues in September, but has yet to see playing time.  A long-time player at Nantes, the 6’4″ Djilobodji helped the French club earn promotion to Ligue 1 following the 2012/2013 season while making 186 appearances for Nantes in all competitions while scoring 10 goals.
