The Christmas cheer is certainly in plentiful supply at the Allianz Arena as Bayern Munich have signed four key players to contract extensions before the Bundesliga signs off for the Winter break. Thomas Müller, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez and Xabi Alonso have all put pen to paper on new deals leaving just one more signature still to secure… that of trainer Pep Guardiola.
German internationals Müller and Boateng have extended their stay with the Bavarian giants until 2021, as has Spaniard Javi Martinez. Alonso meanwhile has accepted a one year extension that will take him to the end of next season.
“We are delighted that these important players have tied themselves long-term” explained Chief-Executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “Thomas, Jerome and Javi know how to win titles as well as the Champions League. With them our squad has stability and quality in the long-term.”
Thomas Müller in particular had been the subject of transfer speculation regarding a move to the English Premier League, but the club idol and Weltmeister is confident Bavaria remains the ideal place for him. “I have the feeling and am convinced that FC Bayern can play very successful football over the next few years. I’m proud and delighted about extending my contract” he explained.
Central defensive pillar Boateng was equally effusive saying: “I’m pleased and happy at the chance to extend my stay here, I’m looking forward to the years ahead and aim for continuing great success with FC Bayern. This is a big contract for me and I’m delighted.”
With the added news that both Martinez and Alonso have also extended their contracts, it is just the positive news that will put a festive smile on the faces of the Bayern faithful as they look to celebrate being crowned Herbstmeister ahead of their final league match of the HInrunde against Hannover.
There is however one dark cloud still spoiling the festive atmosphere with a decision as to the future of coach Pep Guardiola still very much up in the air. The Spanish trainer has vowed that a decision will be made and revealed after the club’s final game of the year against Hannover.
“Kalle knows absolutely everything,” Guardiola has explained. “The club, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and I have said time and time again that we will say something after our final game in Hannover, and that’s how things are going to stay. I’m just focusing on Hannover. I’ve been watching their games.”
Bayern fans will be crossing everything that can be crossed in the hope that their double title winning coach will extend his contract, but speculation is mounting that he will be leaving the club in the summer and moving to England.
The speculation has only been fuelled by the news that Chelsea have parted company with Jose Mourinho, as well as both Manchester clubs not being entirely satisfied with their incumbent managers. It could well be the case that Guardiola has the choice of three of the Premier League’s best clubs for next season.
Santa has delivered an early present for Bayern fans in the form of four player contract extensions, but it could be a case of the club missing out on the present they really want.
