DFB Pokal 2nd Round Continues Tuesday and Wednesday

Midweek German football action will see 32 clubs try to advance to the Round of 16 in the DFB Pokal.  The 16 scheduled matches include some very tasty and intriguing draws for fans of German football to enjoy.

The marquee match among the eight games played on Tuesday has to be the VfL Wolfsburg-Bayern Munich match, a contest between last year’s Pokal champion and the club that has dominated the competition, Bayern Munich, with 17 Pokal titles.  Bayern lost their first game of the season last week in Champions League action when they were beaten in London by Arsenal, but they came back strong Saturday against 1.FC Koln, while Wolfsburg have won three in a row (including their CL win against PSV Tuesday) and will be set for revenge for their late September spanking administered by the Bavarians and also looking to prove that they are an elite club following the Kevin De Bruyne departure.

It will also be interesting to see if 1.FSV Mainz can get back to winning ways Tuesday against hapless 1860 Munich, who are winless in 12 Bundesliga 2 matches.  Mainz have lost four of their last five league matches after a bright start, including all three at home. In Darmstadt, the Lillies host Hannover as both teams look to advance and put some shine on their season, while Eintracht Frankfurt will try to build on their MatchDay 10 win by defeating hosts Erzgebirge Aue, who’ve slipped to midtable in 3. Liga. Also, VfL Bochum will try to recover from their surrender of a two goal lead Friday against FSV Frankfurt by knocking off another traditional German club, 1.FC Kaiserslautern.

Wednesday’s big match will be feature Schalke hosting Borussia Mönchengladbach, who met at Borussia Park on Sunday with Gladbach taking all three points courtesy of two second-half goals.  But also intriguing will be matches featuring two of Germany’s most exciting clubs, as Borussia Dortmund host Paderborn while Bayer Leverkusen play away to Victoria Köln.  Dortmund laid five goals on FC Augsburg Sunday, while Leverkusen scored four against AS Roma in midweek Champions League competiton and another four on Stuttgart Saturday.   Wednesday fixtures also include a Baden-Württemberg derby between SV Sandhausen and 1.FC Heidenheimer, along with a matchup between Werder Bremen and 1.FC Köln, both clubs that had European ambitions at the start of the season. Two more Wednesday matches that intrigue will be lower-division Carl Zeiss Jena hosting VfB Stuttgart in a bid for an upset against a Stuttgart side that played well but still lost over the weekend, while second division SC Freiburg will look to prove that their campaign to bounce back to the top-division is for real with a win against reeling FC Augsburg.  All in all, this is as interesting a Pokal second round as imaginable.

On Tuesday in the U.S., ESPN 3 will stream the 1.FSV Mainz-1860 Munich match at 1:50pm EDT and the VfL Wolfsburg – Bayern Munich contest at 3:20 pm.  Wednesday’s fare on ESPN 3 consists of the Borussia Dortmund – SC Paderborn game at 1:20 pm EDT followed by the FC Schalke – Borussia Monchengladbach matchup at 3:20pm.  ESPN Deportes will televise Tuesday’s Wolfsburg-Bayern tilt and on Wednesday televise the derby between Victoria Köln and Bayer Leverkusen at 1:55 pm EDT.
