September is upon us meaning we’ve already had the first three matches of the new season and a chance to weigh up the performances of the various sides. Two sides have a 100% record and it is from one of those teams that comes August’s Player of the Month.
Step forward Douglas Costa.
The Brazilian summer signing from Shakhtar Donetsk has certainly grabbed the attention in the early stages of the season and begun to justify the €30 million that Bayern Munich shelled out for his services. Straight off the bat, the 24-year-old wide man produced a dazzling performance against Hamburg in the season opener and he’s delivered similar shows against both Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen.
Either on the left flank or moving out to the right, Costa has been unplayable at times, and has already struck up a great relationship with Thomas Müller providing him with two assists already.
The absence of Franck Ribery with a long-term injury has hardly been felt by the Bavarians with Costa taking no time at all to settle into his new home at the Allianz Arena.
Of the three games, the Hamburg game was the pick of the bunch with an assist for Müller’s headed goal and then a wonderful goal of his own late on to seal the 5-0 win.
He’s shown blistering pace, top technical ability and a trick or two. His ‘Lambretta’ against Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt saw him acrobatically flick the ball up and over his opponent’s head.
Arjen Robben though has warned him against the circus-tricks, but Pep Guardiola seemingly has no such concerns saying: “”He’s a Brazilian — Neymar is just like that. Douglas is a good player, and an outstanding guy. He always respects the opponent”.
Honorary mentions must also go to a couple of other players who, while not Player of the Month, have had a fantastic month of August. Thomas Müller has started with five goals from his first three matches and without Costa would have got the award. Almost the entire Dortmund side could be considered, but special mentions go to Henrikh Mkhitaryan and youngster Juilian Weigl.
