DFB Pokal Resumes Tuesday and Wednesday

The DFB Pokal tournament resumes this week, with four 3rd Round matches on Tuesday and another four Wednesday. The 64 teams that qualified for the competition will be whittled down to eight by Wednesday evening.  (If you’re thinking the 3rd round is being held rather late this season, you are correct. In recent years, the 3rd Round action has been played in December).

The Bundesliga teams include Bayern Munich (17 times Pokal winners), Werder Bremen (six), 1. FC Köln (four), Borussia Dortmund (three), Borussia Mönchengladbach (three), Bayer 04 Leverkusen (one), VfL Wolfsburg (runnerup once) as well as SC Freiburg and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.  Clubs from the Bundesliga 2 include 1. FC Kaiserslautern (twice Pokal champions), Eintracht Braunschweig, VfR Aalen and RB Leipzig.  Making it to the third round from Germany’s lower divisions are Dynamo Dresden, Arminia Bielefeld and Kickers Offenbach.  Although the odds of winning the competition for the lower division clubs are slim, Bielefeld is having a fine season and leads 3. Liga by nine points after 27 league matches.

For fans who have access, ESPN 3 will be streaming four of the eight games…..kicking off with Tuesday’s Leverkusen/Kaiserslautern match (12:55 pm EST), followed by Dynamo Dresden/Borussia Dortmund contest (2:55 PM EST).  Wednesday ESPN 3 will stream the 12:55 pm match between Bayern Munich and Eintracht Braunschweig, following at 2:55 pm with Kickers Offenbach hosting Gladbach.  (For those who didn’t have access to ESPN 3 in the past, it now is available to subscribers of DirecTV and the DISH network, as well as many other networks).  Bayern’s match will also be televised on EPSN Deportes.

The Pokal’s third round promises some exciting matches.  Bayern, Wolfsburg, Gladbach and Leverkusen are the top four teams in Germany’s first division, and all come off league wins on the just concluded MatchDay 23.  Werder Bremen had been undefeated in its first five Ruckrunde matches until losing a wild one to Wolfsburg on Sunday, and Freiburg have made some deep runs in the Pokal the last two years. Additionally, RB Leipzig were winners this weekend as were the Red Devils of Kaiserslautern, who currently occupy the promotion/playoff spot in the 2nd division.
