Borussia Mönchengladbach have completed the signing of attacker Thorgan Hazard from English club Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of €8m. The Belgian has impressed when given the opportunity in his initial loan spell this season, enough so that the duo of Max Eberl and Lucien Favre saw it fitting to hand him a five-year contract which runs until 2020.
Chelsea are thought to possess a buy-back option for the 21-year old in the terms of the transfer, but the move is a very positive step forward for Borussia, allowing another talented player to grow on their books over the coming years. Hazard has already made 29 appearance for die Fohlen, scoring four goals and setting up eight goals, despite often appearing as a substitute. Hazard has the most assists of any Bundesliga player below the age of 22 this season, and has contributed to a goal every 104 minutes in a Gladbach kit, a formidable record for a player of any age.
Hazard’s performances have impressed generally, and he certainly looks a much improved player than the one who arrived on loan at Borussia-Park back in July. His set-pieces in particular have caught the eye, something important given Borussia’s loss of Juan Arango in the summer – Hazard has, at the very least, made his team look somewhat menacing at set pieces since the Winterpause, with the most memorable moment in recent weeks being his late assist for Granit Xhaka in the Rheinderby against Köln.
“Thorgan has shown what a great talent he is over the past few months” said Sporting Director Max Eberl to Borussia.de. “We are delighted to have signed him, and that he’s decided to play for Borussia in the coming years”. The young Belgian has certainly kicked on from a promising loan spell at Zulte Waregem during his time at Borussia-Park, and is himself aiming to kick on during the next few seasons.
“I think Borussia are the right club for me to continue developing with” said Hazard, on signing the contract. “It’s still too early for me to play for Chelsea. Borussia are the club that suits me best at the moment. I want to play for the same club for a number of years and I feel that will be the case here”.
Hazard began his professional career in France with RC Lens in 2011. He was signed by Chelsea in July, 2012 and went out on loan to Belgian side Zulte Waregem, where he featured in 73 matches, scoring 19 goals. He has one senior squad cap for Belgium and has represented Belgian national youth sides on 61 occasions since 2008. Thorgan’s older brother Eden is a star at Chelsea, and younger brother Kylian plays for Zulte Waregem, while youngest sibling Ethan is at the youth academy at Tublize. The Hazard’s parents both played professionally in Belgium.
