The Germans started the game very quickly in the opening exchanges as they opened up an onslaught on the USA’s penalty area. Germany were playing precise and clinical passing but they couldn’t create a decent chance and penetrate the fort that was the USA defence.
The USA then started to exploit the Germans’ defensive frailties as they deployed counterattacks whenever possible. During one of the successful counterattacks, a controversial decision occurred. Fabian Johnson was on a promising attack when Benedikt Höwedes cut down Johnson, but instead of letting the USA play on, the referee called it back for the foul and booked Höwedes for his cynical challenge.
The first chance of the game fell to the USA, DaMarcus Beasley cut inside from his left-back position and went past Jerome Boateng but his effort was poor as he hit the side netting. The Americans created some of the best chances in the first half as the next chance went to them. The former German international, Jermaine Jones made a powerful surging run in the midfield, he then proceeded by passing it onto Michael Bradley who quickly flicked it onto Graham Zusi but his effort just went wide.
Germany then started to get into the ascendency and started to assert their dominance just before halftime as they had two decent chances, the first from Toni Kross but his low stinging effort was parried away by Tim Howard. The next was from Arsenal’s Mesut Özil, he dropped his shoulder and cut inside on his right foot but his effort went straight into the hands of Tim Howard.
Miroslav Klose was introduced just after halftime and he nearly broke the World Cup scoring record, but his glancing header just went wide. Then in the 55th the first goal was scored, Tim Howard pulled off an exceptional save but it bounced straight into the path of Thomas Müller, he then curled in a wonderful striker past the helpless Tim Howard to put the Die Mannschaft 1-0 up. This meant that was Müller’s 4th goal of the tournament and his 9th goal in World Cup competition.
Throughout the rest of the second half it was a rather drab affair with nothing significant happening, the USA attempted to push for an equaliser bur couldn’t create any clear chances until the final few moments of the half. A swift counterattack by the USA was finished off Alejandro Bedoya attempting to get an equaliser until the reliable Philipp Lahm appeared from nowhere and made a superb sliding block. Clint Dempsey also had a chance to equalise but his late header went straight over the bar.
This result meant that Germany topped the group with 7 points, and USA finished 2nd with 4 points, Portugal finished 3rd with 4 points but had a much inferior goal difference compared to theUSA. Ghana finished bottom with just a solitary point.
