Gladbach Sign Swiss Keeper Sommer

With Borussia Mönchengladbach’s starting goalkeeper, Marc Andre ter Stegen, moving from the club in the summer, Gladbach management have already acquired his replacement by signing FC Basel’s Yann Sommer to a contract that runs through June, 2019.  Sommer will join Die Fohlen this summer, and his signing is the second recent Gladbach signing that looks to the future, as Gladbach also signed Hoffenheim’s versatile Fabian Johnson a few weeks ago.

Sommer, 25, came up through Basel’s youth system and made his senior club debut in 2009.  He has made 98 appearances in goal for the Swiss club, and another 33 appearances while on loan to Swiss side Grasshoppers during the 2009-2010 campaign.  The Swiss-born keeper has also made 39 European appearances for Basel, with more coming as the club advanced into the round of 16 after eliminating Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Foals’ Sporting Director Max Eberl commented

After  Marc-André ter Stegen told us he definitely wanted to leave the club at the end of the season, we agreed terms over a transfer with his new club,” said director of sport Max Eberl. “He’ll be moving abroad, that much is certain. His successor in goal will be Yann Sommer. He’s an excellent keeper who at the age of 25 has already gathered a lot of international experience and we’re delighted he’s decided to join us. told us he definitely wanted to leave the club at the end of the season, we agreed terms over a transfer with his new club, He’ll be moving abroad, that much is certain. Sommer already has three Swiss Super League titles under his belt, as well as a Swiss Cup championship.  The 6-footer also has worked his way up the Swiss national team youth system, making his Swiss senior squad goalkeeping debut in a May, 2012 friendly against Romania.  He was called up for last week’s friendly against Croatia and has totaled five appearances for Switzerland behind incumbent goalkeeper Diego Benaglio of VfL Wolfsburg.
