DFB Pokal Third Round Draw

It wasn’t an easy Second Round for some of the Bundesliga teams, as Schalke struggled to overcome SV Darmstadt 98 3-1 away from home and Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim needed extra time to beat 1860 München and Energie Cottbus respectively, with Dortmund coming out 2-0 victors and Hoffenheim winning 3-0. Two Bundesliga scalps were claimed; Mainz, who lost at home to an in-form top-of-the-table Köln side, with Marcel Risse’s goal enough to seal the pass to the next round and Hertha Berlin, defeated 3-1 at Kaiserslautern. Struggling 3. Liga team 1. FC Saarbrücken are the lowest team in the next round after their 2-1 victory over SC Paderborn. Meanwhile, Regionalliga West’s bottom side SC Wiedenbrück’s dream of reaching the final stage of the Pokal ended with a narrow 3-1 home defeat against SV Sandhausen, after having led 1-0 at half time.

The draw was made last Sunday for the DFB Pokal’s last 16 and it has some tasty matches in it. The highest ranked team, Borussia Dortmund, will face lowest-ranked Saarbrücken while Köln will fight for a place in the last 8 at Hamburg. There’ll be a Bavarian matchup between Augsburg and Bayern München and Sandhausen face the short trip north to Frankfurt to play Eintracht.
