Injuries have sidelined two of the Bundesliga’s most-anticipated newcomers, as Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan will miss the DFL SuperCup and BvB’s first round Pokal match, while Stuttgart’s Marco Rojas has a broken right foot.
Mkhitaryan suffered torn ankle ligaments in Dortmund’s test match victory Tuesday against FC Lucerne. It is hoped that the Armenian playmaker will be ready for the club’s season opener against Eintracht Braunschweig after the injury to his right ankle.
Rojas, the young New Zealand energizer, broke the right metatarsal bone in his foot last week in a friendly. Expected to splash creativity into a Stuttgart attack that often paints by number, the diminutive attacking midfielder will likely miss 4-6 weeks and be absent for the Pokal opener for last season’s finalists as well as the Swabians’ opening league match. Rojas is able to continue to keep up some level of fitness with the injury through swimming, bicycling and weight work.
