While Oliver Kreuzer made his first HSV signing, Lucien Favre has reunited with a favorite attacker at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Daniel Royer is leaving the Bundesliga, while Werder Bremen are mulling over various attacking options to add this summer. In Brazil, Bundesliga players have been able to find the back of the net in the Confederations Cup.
Kreuzer Brings Zoua to HSV
Newly appointed Hamburger SV Sporting Director Oliver Kreuzer has made his first signing for HSV, inking FC Basel forward Jacques Zoua. Reportedly HSV acquired the 21 year-old Cameroonian for under 1 million euros as he committed to a three-year deal.
Zoua has been with FC Basel since 2009. The 6’1″ striker has appeared in 80 Swiss Super League matches, scoring 14 goals as Basel has won three league titles and two Swiss Cups during his time with the club. Zoua has also earned three senior caps for Cameroon’s national team while previously featuring for the Cameroonian U-20 side that went to the 2009 Africa Youth Championship finals, where they fell to Ghana. Zoua netted three times during that tournament.
Raffael to Borussia Mönchengladbach
Gladbach’s Max Eberl got his man — signing longtime Hertha Berlin attacking midfielder Raffael to a four-year deal. The Brazilian comes from Dynamo Kyiv after playing on loan last spring for Schalke, where he scored two goals in 16 matches.
Raffael, 28, began his career with Swiss club FC Chiasso in 2003, where he scored 30 goals before moving up to FC Zurich, where current Gladbach manager Lucien Favre was coach. His success in Switzerland led Favre to acquire the Brazilian when he coached Hertha Berlin, and Raffael responded by scoring 33 goals in 140 league matches in Germany’s capital. Between 20110 and 2012 Raffael played on the same Hertha squad with his younger brother, Ronny, but the elder brother left for the Ukraine a year ago, but did not experience the success he had in Germany and Switzerland. Raffael started seven matches for Schalke, completing 85% of his passing attempts and chipping in with five assists as the Royal Blues rebounded from a rough patch during the winter to earn a Champions League berth late in the season.
In Raffael we are acquiring a versatile and technically gifted player for our attack. This transfer wasn’t without complications, so we are happy it has gone through
Raffael has scored 106 league goals in his decade playing in Switzerland, Germany and the Ukraine. The Foals held their first practice session Monday, attracting 500 fans.
Royer Returns to Austria
Hannover’s Daniel Royer, who played on loan at FC Koln last season, has signed a contract with Austrian Bundesliga champions FK Austria Wien. Royer, 23, has earned six international caps for Austria and featured in 24 matches for the Billy Goats last season.
Werder Bremen Considering Barrios
Werder Bremen are considering bringing in former Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios to boost their woeful attack. Barrios would come on a free transfer as the club he last played for, Guangzhou Evergrande, apparently were irregular in paying his salary. Barrios, 28, scored 49 goals in his three seasons at Dortmund after coming over from Chilean club Colo Colo. He scored 13 goals in 32 competitive matches while in China, but may be too expensive for Bremen. Other potential candidates to bolster Bremen’s attack are SC Heerenveen’s Alfred Finnbogason, 24, the Icelandic international who scored 24 Eredivisie goals last season and Matej Vydra, the 21 year-old Czech who scored 20 goals on loan at Watford from Udinese.
Bayern Munich star central defender Dante scored his first international goal Saturday while playing in his hometown of Salvador as Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 in Confederations Cup group play. Stuttgart’s Shinji Okazaki scored two goals in the tournament, against Italy and Mexico, but his Japan team went winless in the group stage and were eliminated.
