The Bundesliga in 2012 – A Statistical Overview

The end of the Hinrunde and this past week’s German Cup matches rounded off an action packed and interesting calendar year in German football.  Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund were the Bundesliga’s most talked about and dominant teams while Germany made all the headlines in the summer (some good, some bad) with their record breaking run of games and the contentious loss to Italy at the EUROs.

Bild.de collected some of the most interesting stats of 2012 in the Bundesliga, ranging from the fastest goal scored, the quickest sending off, the most fouled players and much much more.

3060 – The amount of minutes on the pitch by Ron-Robert Zieler (Hannover), Sven Ulreich (Stuttgart) and Diego Benaglio (Wolfsburg).  All three goalkeepers are tied for the most playing minutes in the league in 2012.  Nürnberg’s Timmy Simons was the outfield player with the most minutes (3040).

403.2 – The amount of kilometers covered by Nürnberg’s veteran midfielder Timmy Simons in the calendar year, a league high.

122 – The number of saves made by Stuttgart’s number one, Sven Ulreich, a league high in 2012.  Ulreich also conceded more goals than any other goalkeeper in the league in 2012 though (54).

104 – The number of fouls suffered by Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling in 2012, more than any other player in the league.

77 – The highest numbers of fouls made by one player in 2012.  Surprisingly it is neither a defender or midfielder committing this but Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic.

25 – The amount of goals scored by Stefan Kiessling in the league in the calendar year, more than any other striker in the Bundesliga.

23 – The amount of seconds it took for Mario Gomez to score the fastest goal in 2012 on April 7 against Augsburg.

23 – The highest number of substitutions of one player in 2012 belongs to Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Patrick Herrmann who was taken out of a match 21 times in the calendar year.

21 – The number of times Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug was substituted into a match in 2012, a league high.

20 – The amount of assists from Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery.  He set up more goals in 2012 than any other player in the league.

18 – 18 seconds. That’s how long it took for Borussia Mönchengladbach right back Tony Jantschke to get booked in their game against Schalke this season, a record in 2012.

11 – The amount of yellows received by Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones in 2012, more than any other player in the Bundesliga.

7 – Mario Mandzukic scored the most headed goals in 2012.  He topped the league in that category for the 2011/12 season, this season currently held by Eintracht Frankfurt’s Alexander Meier.

4 – The fastest sending off in 2012 came in the 4th minute of the Freiburg/Mainz match when Freiburg defender Fallou Diagne fouled Mainz striker Adam Szalai.
