GolTV has been the carrier of Bundesliga matches in the United States since 2006, and is the licensed carrier of the Bundesliga matches in the United States and Canada through June, 2015 after renewing their agreement with DFL Sports Enterprises many months ago.
As a DirectV subscriber, I was very happy when GolTV began broadcasting the Bundesliga in glorious HD and even happier that this season they have been televising FIVE Bundesliga matches per weekend on MatchDay One and Two. GolTV has also provided more Bundesliga programming for us addicts with the shows “Hallo Bundesliga” and “The Bundesliga Magazine.” The GolTV logo is also present, with a link, on the official English language Bundesliga website.
But apparently DirecTV is determined to remove GolTV from its sports pack programming effective September 13. According to the GolTV website
Despite GolTV’s efforts to negotiate a solution for soccer fans, DirecTV is
determined to eliminate more than 500 live and exclusive soccer matches
aired each year by the network. For consumers who love soccer and want to
see GolTV’s 24-hour programming, including Bundesliga, European World Cup
qualifiers, the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and top leagues and tournaments from
the Americas, we urge you to contact DirectTV to let them know that you want
to watch your favorite teams on GolTV.
The possibility of not being able to watch live broadcasts of Bundesliga matches in HD just as the international break is ending and MatchDay 3 starts up is frustrating beyond belief. The Miami-based GolTV also carries soccer/football/futbol from Argentina, Brasil, Mexico and Uruguay, including matches of such famed teams as Boca Juniors, River Plate, Corinthians, Sao Paulo, SC Internacional, Penarol, Nacional and so many of the other great clubs from South America. And they are carrying the WCQ between Austria and Germany next Tuesday at 2:30 pm EDT.
If you one of the over 19 million DirecTV subscribers, or a potential subscriber, who want GolTV to continue to be part of the sports package programming of the huge satellite provider, contact DirecTV by phone 1-888-777-2454 or send an email at http://support.directv.com/app/ask
If GolTV is dropped from DirecTV, it will mean that Bundesliga match broadcasts will be unavailable on either of the two major satellite providers in the U.S. (Dish dropped GolTV in 2008, and they have reduced their My Sports Germany Bundesliga programming package to just the Friday match and the Saturday conference according to American Schalke superfan and Bundesliga Fanatic contributor Jody Strauch). In many instances, American Bundesliga fans will have no option but to rely on illegal, inconsistent streams of matches that aren’t archived for later viewing.
Joerg Daubitzer, Managing Director of DFL Sports Enterprises, stated at the time of the DFL contract renewal
We selected GolTV because of its large and loyal viewership. Our partnership with GolTV ensures that the Bundesliga maintains high exposure in these top markets with matches as well as special programming such as ‘Hallo Bundesliga’ and the DFL-produced ‘Bundesliga Magazine
