No other side in Europe has more appearances or been more successful at the European Championship than Germany. With a record three titles and six final appearances they stand heads above the competition. That wasn’t always the case though and Germany either did not participate or failed to qualify for the first three installments of the tournament before, entering and winning for the first time in 1972. They then went on to make the next two finals as well in 1976 and in 1980, winning the latter. They were runners up again in 1992 before winning it for the third time in 1996. That was followed with an extended dry spell until they reached the final again in 2008, losing out to Spain. Germany are now hoping to end a 16 year spell without an international trophy and rekindle their glorious history.
