The U.S. and Canadian men’s national teams announced their rosters for this summer’s Gold Cup. The CONCACAF nation that captures this year’s Gold Cup will qualify for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, a year prior to the next FIFA Men’s World Cup.
For American Bundesliga fans, Coach Bob Bradley’s choices for the 23 man roster was a disappointment, as Hannover captain and right back Steve Cherundolo was the only player chosen for the competition who currently plays in Germany. Midfielders Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones, who were on loan to EPL clubs Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers respectively, were also named to the squad. Bradley is still technically a member of the Borussia Monchengladbach side, while Jones remains part of the Schalke squad at the moment, but it’s uncertain at this point if either will return to the Bundesliga.
Several capped Americans playing in Germany were not picked for this roster. 1. FC Nurnberg’s Timmy Chandler, who impressed in his American debut matches against Argentina and Uruguay earlier this year, apparently was left off the roster by mutual consent between himself and Coach Bradley, as Chandler cited fatigue from the long season, his first in the top-level of German soccer. MSV Duisburg goalkeeper David Yelldell, who also got his first American cap earlier this year, lost out in his bid to take the third keeper spot on the roster to Real Salt Lake’s goalkeeper Nick Rimando, while FC Ingolstadt’s forward Edson Buddle, who was part of the 2010 USMNT World Cup squad, also was not selected.
The Canadian side, however, is endowed with more of a ‘soccer made in Germany’ flavor. Five Canadians earn their paychecks in Germany. Canadian Head Coach Stephen Hart has called up veteran defender Kevin McKenna from FC Koln. FC Augsburg’s midfielder Marcel de Jong and Hertha Berlin forward Rob Friend, who each helped their clubs gain promotion to 1. Bundesliga, were also named along with defender/midfielder Nik Ledgerwood of SV Wehen Wiesbaden and midfielder Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault of SC Preußen Münster.
Canada and the U.S. will compete in Group C of the tournament along with Panama and Guadeloupe. The other eight teams in this year’s completion include Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba and El Salvador in Group A and Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala and Grenada in Group B. The Canadian national team will meet Ecuador in a tune-up for the tournament on June 1 at Toronto’s BMO Field while the USMNT will play a friendly against Spain on June 4 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Canadians and Americans meet in their first group stage match June 7 in Detroit. The Gold Cup final will be played June 25 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
