Player profile: The bad boy of the Bundesliga, Martin Lanig

Martin Lanig has so far received 11 yellow cards this season, and is so far been noted for being the most physical player of the league. But, he is so much more then that for his team 1. FC Koln.

The 26 year old midfielder controls the defensive midfield of Koln with an iron grip, together with former Portuguese international Petit. While his partner is responsible for getting attacks started, and giving the likes of Peszko and Podolski something to work with, Lanig plays the role of sweeper in front of the defense.

Box to box
Besides being amongst the most committed players of the league when it comes to his tackles, Lanig is almost amongst those who run the most. During those runs Lanig often gets on the end of an attack. In his 52 Bundesliga appearances the 190 cm tall midfielder has scored 6 goals. Due to his height Lanig is also important on corner kicks, and used as a weapon on free kicks by the team from the cathedral city.

Room for improvement
While Lanig has shown is qualities in defense, there is still some room for improvement. Lanig’s passing game often suffers from inaccuracy. Furthermore, his temper can get the better of Lanig, and a number of the yellow cards Lanig has received in the past, came due to dissent.
